If you're learning cloud computing, the first question everyone asks is: which cloud platform should I start with? Here's the honest answer for Canadian job-seekers in 2026.

Market share and Canadian job postings

Globally, AWS has ~31% market share, Azure ~25%, GCP ~11%. But Canadian job postings tell a slightly different story:

AWS — best for most people

Start here if: You want the most job options, you're going into startups or tech companies, or you just want one answer.

AWS has the largest ecosystem, the most third-party tools, and the most learning resources. The AWS Cloud Practitioner certification (~$175 CAD) is the most recognized entry-level cloud cert in Canada.

Free training: AWS offers free training at aws.amazon.com/training. The Cloud Practitioner Essentials course is completely free.

Azure — best for enterprise and government

Start here if: You want to work at a large corporation, Canadian government, bank, or hospital. These organizations are deeply invested in the Microsoft ecosystem and prefer Azure.

The AZ-900 (Azure Fundamentals) certification is the entry point — cheaper than AWS (~$165 CAD) and respected in enterprise environments.

GCP — best for AI/ML specialization

Start here if: You're specifically going into machine learning or AI engineering. Google's ML infrastructure is legitimately ahead of the competition — TPUs, BigQuery ML, and Vertex AI are best-in-class.

Fewer jobs than AWS or Azure in Canada, but the jobs that do specify GCP tend to be at higher-paying, more technically sophisticated companies.
